What I Love About My Work
I have two different reasons why I do what I do – one is why I chose to have my own business, and the other is why I am passionate about my specialisation. Let me share both with you:
Firstly, why do I work for myself? Well, I’m a single parent with two children, and my youngest has special needs. In the past, when I was running large organisations and managing teams, I heavily relied on nannies and au-pairs to help me take care of my son’s needs, along with his older sister. However, during the COVID pandemic, I realised that this setup was not sustainable in the long run. My son needed more of my time, and I found myself juggling remote work, home-schooling, and parenting without any assistance. Since I’m not originally from Melbourne, I didn’t have the luxury of relying on family for help. The lockdowns exacerbated my son’s issues and increased his anxiety levels. I had to seriously consider our next steps. As appealing as it may sound to move to a remote beach, that wasn’t a practical option for us (especially since I proved to be a less-than-stellar home “teacher” during remote schooling!). So, I made the decision to return to working directly with my favourite clients, taking on assignments that I could pick and choose, and working flexible hours based on results. This way, I can comfortably juggle my full-time work, single parenting responsibilities, and my son’s special needs requirements.
Now, let’s talk about why I am so passionate about my specialisation – because I absolutely love it! Before becoming a recruiter, I had a background in sales and marketing within the technology sector. I have a deep understanding of go-to-market channels for technology solutions, thanks to my experience in various roles. My very first IT role was as a Buyer for a tech portfolio at the largest Australian distributor at the time. Sales recruitment can be volatile – you’ll need to replace the occasional candidate. However, generating revenue is crucial for every business, and your sales force represents the “face” of your company, product, or solution. The decision of whom you hire for your team is incredibly important, and I find great joy in being part of that process. Having been a salesperson myself, I understand the sales process inside out. I’ve been through those daunting tenders to secure national enterprise deals first-hand. Therefore, when I interview a candidate, it’s easy for me to discern who is genuinely knowledgeable and who is just bluffing.
So, there you have it – my two “whys” that drive me and make me truly love what I do. Working for myself allows me to balance my personal and professional responsibilities, while my specialisation in sales recruitment enables me to tap into my passion and expertise. It’s a fulfilling journey that I’m grateful to be on!
